MelCat Visiting Patron

Sanilac District Library  participates in the MelCat Visiting Patron Service. This means that our patrons in good standing may  go to another library which also participates in this service and check out books in person. When you bring the books to their Circulation Desk, they will use your Sanilac District Library card to check them out to  you. Be sure to have a picture I.D. with you as well as your library card.  You may return books to the lending library yourself or to our library and we will send them back through the MelCat delivery service. Patrons from other participating libraries may also visit our library and borrow our books.

Participating libraries are listed on the MelCat website.   A chart lists the name of the  library, a link to their website, city, and Yes or No if participating in the Visiting Patron Service. You may also check your MyMel account for a list of books that you have borrowed from other libraries, their due dates and request renewals. Select Sanilac District Library from the list, type in your name and library card number.  You may also check the status of your requests and cancel them.

A MichiCard allows Sanilac District Library patrons in good standing to register for a library card without charge from other libraries that also participate in the MichiCard program. The MichiCard holder must follow the rules and policies of each library.

List of Participating Libraries - A list of participating libraries by city location of main library.

MichiCard Regulations

  • All rules, policies and restrictions normally imposed by the local library will apply to persons presenting the MichiCard borrower's card.

  • The home library will issue the MichiCard borrower's card by affixing the MichiCard sticker to the individual library cards held by borrowers who are residents living in the library's legally established service area. The library "service areas" are defined as the institution's legally established service area.

  • Libraries MAY NOT issue a MichiCard sticker to any non-resident who does not live in their service area or provide financial support for the library.

  • MichiCard cardholders must register for a library card at each library that they use.

  • MichiCard cardholders will not be charged a non-resident fee when borrowing books from participating libraries.

  • Printed materials will be made available to MichiCard borrowers. Local library policies may permit the loaning of other types of materials to non-residents.

Library for the Blind & Physically Handicapped

Do you enjoy a good book, but are no longer able to read small print? People who are unable to read standard print material due to a visual or physical disability have a free library that they may access from their own home.

The Library for the Blind and Physically Handicapped (LBPH) was established by Congress in 1931 to provide free reading materials for visually impaired American citizens throughout the world. The LBPH service was later extended to people with other physical disabilities, including learning disabilities in children.

The St. Clair County Library System is the LBPH regional center serving Huron, Sanilac County, St. Claire and Tuscola counties. Check out their website, LBPH or call 1.800.272.8570  for more information .
